Todays show decided that religion would take central stage, not content with internal war and strife HBO’S flagship program has decreed that your attention must be drawn to all things Godlike. Dragons, check. Power struggles, check. Sex and nudity, check. Violence and terror, check. So what about all things holy?
We already know of the old gods and the new, the flame priests and priestesses but how about The Sparrows? HQ in Kings landing they are fundamentalists, trying to right the perceived wrongs. The High Septon is not quite as pious as he could be, the order grown fat on the wealth of others and The Sparrows aim to right this wrong.
Oh and throw in Jaqen H’ghar’s assertion that the seven are just facets of one God and we now have God bothering to go with military campaigns.
The series shows no sign of letting up; Pod is getting trained to be a Knight, Jon is following in his fathers footsteps, Sansa is still and idiot and Arya is not quite as ready to give up her identity as she lets on. This raises the delightful possibility that the Stark in Winterfell in the future is a stone cold killer, Cersi and co better watch out!
There are so many twists and turns that it is hard to keep up, Brienne reminds us that her goal is to kill Stannis, Theon reminds us that he is still captive of the Boltons and Ser Mormont reminds us he is still in the game…
All that plus some sort of monster a la Frankenstein and you have something for everyone.
