I’ve finally manged to get up to date with Justified. Now all I need to do is catch up with Sons of Anarchy, 24, Hell on Wheels and Supernatural. Quite the backlog but it’s not like I’m doing anything else, anyway what follows is a few of my thoughts on season 5. Guess what it is going to contain? Yep that’s right, spoilers.
Season four finished on a knifes edge. Ava in prison and Boyd ready to do anything to get her out, Raylan putting his ethics aside and letting Nicky Augustine know just who is messing with. Throw into the mix Arlo’s death and series five has a lot to live up to.
Sadly it falls somewhat short. Ava’s incarceration, while eventful, is somewhat stilted. A whole host of one dimensional characters are trotted out and none hold the attention for long.
Even this years villains are somewhat unimpressive. While the Crowe clan are not to be taken lightly they lack the menace of Quarles or the enjoyable slipperiness of Dickie. The family issues they have might be diverting but as they have just appeared it is less interesting than Raylan and Winona’s relationship, which is hardly even mentioned.
Dewey Crowe is back, primarily for laughs as he does very little of importance. The fact that he ends up under arrest by the end of the series suggests that he has run his race but as Dickie Bennett made a disappointingly brief appearance in the local penitentiary you never know.
The saving grace, indeed the primary reason most people watch, is Olyphant and Goggins. Obviously you can’t have Justified without Marshal Givens and by this stage the Hawaiian born actor can do tightly wound and barley contained anger in his sleep, so no problems there. However the writers seem to have forgotten about Crowder as he becomes a side attraction to Daryl,Danny and their sister/cousin/mother/auntie.
Indeed the amount of screen time Olyphant and Goggins share is shocking small, you can’t have everything though and Boyd does go back to his roots in one memorable scene involving a pack of cigarettes.
Warned you about those spoilers…
Season six will be the final outing for Olyphant and co and the way the current series end does promise big things for the next one. Ava allegedly ratting on her fiance (cause that will work out well) and the desire of Rachel Brooks to go after Boyd via a rico case. Though as everyone is his organisation appears to be dead that seems pointless… It does however offer up the hope that he will be handed the role of big bad for season six.
The fact that the shows reoccurring song is You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive suggests that blood is in the air and all bets are off. A Butch Cassidy ending would be great but we will have to wait and see.
So what do you think? Does anyone other than me actually watch this show? Leave a comment below and I promise to get back to you.
