My invite to the worlds largest gaming expo must have gotten lost in the post, next year though, next year…
A lot of the news filtering out of Los Angeles is pretty boring, another Call of Duty game, yawn. ANOTHER outing for Desmond Miles zzzzz
There where however a few exciting titbits of gossip and one or two spectacular trailers, such as the one for the new Mortal Kombat. You know it’s awesome because instead of a number following the name it has a X.
The footage is all gameplay and features old favourites Sub-Zero and Scorpion going toe to toe plus a glimpse at the two, as yet unnamed, new characters. Enough of my rambling… FIGHT!
It seems NetherRealm Studios have gone down the Soul Calibur rote of having the fighters fling ridiculous taunts at each other before each battle, good stuff! The backgrounds are looking scrumptious, lots of little details and beautiful animations. However no one is playing Mortal Kombat to look at the pretty flowers, they are playing for the blood, the brutality and the ability to dismember your opponent at the push of the button, from the trailer all that looks present and correct… FINISH HIM!
Another tantalising reveal was that of Rise of the Tomb Raider,a direct sequel to 2013’s reboot. Acording to Micorsoft “Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider, featuring epic, high-octane action moments, Rise of the Tomb Raider will take gamers to multiple locations around the world filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth.” So pretty much like its predecessor then but that is no bad thing as Lara’s last outing was a brilliant example of how to reinvigorate a flagging franchise.
Crystal Dynamics seem to be taking heed of the complaints leveled their way by announcing “after hearing the cry from fans loud and clear, the game will put the tombs back into “Tomb Raider” all in the franchise’s gritty Survival-Action style.” Granted that is somewhat ambiguous but lets hope it means more puzzle solving and exploration.
The trailer doesn’t really show much but it looks cool all the same and err has a bear. The game is due out Holiday 2015, which for us chaps in Blighty means sometime round about Christmas.
One of the most exciting but sadly vague announcements was that of Mass Effect 4, very little was said but developers promised a brand new galaxy and characters, they also added… Oh just watch the video, it’s a couple of dudes saying lots without actually saying anything. Doing my job for me really…
A chance to wash away the horrible memories of that ending, count me in.
I’ll be back tonight with some of the other games that sparked my interest.
