1997 was an eventful year; Princess Diana sadly passed away, Tony Blair succeeded John Major as Prime Minister, the first Harry Potter book was published, Titanic ruled the box office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer burst onto our TV screens.
Running till 2003, spanning 145 episodes and staring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joss Whedon’s subversive creation was a huge hit.
Whedon has been busy writing the screenplays for Toy Story, Alien Resurrection, Titan A.E and of course Directing(and writing) The Avengers and Serenity.
Incidentally if you have not seen Serenity, go and watch it right now!!
Whatever happened to the original members of the Scooby Gang though?
First up, non-other than Buffy Summers herself. Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Looking a bit haggard there Sarah, It must be that busy schedule of yours…
This year Sarah starred alongside Robin Williams in TVs the Crazy Ones, however the show was met with a mixed reception and a second series remains debatable.
Despite winning plenty of plaudits for her portrayal of Sunnydale’s protector- in-chief and wisely playing against type in 1999s Cruel Intentions, Geller never really managed to crack Hollywood. The lead role in The Grudge and its sequel are the stand out performances on her CV.
However this is probably by her own design as she pointed out “I think it’s gotten me to this point now where I don’t have this burning desire to accomplish anything. That (Buffy) was so fulfilling for me in every way that everything I do now is the cherry on top. I don’t feel the pressure to do this or have to do this or go here or do that because I feel like I’ve already won.”
Focusing instead on her personal life, she married her Scooby Doo co-star Freddie Prinze Jr in 2002 and has two (presumably) beautiful children.
Next up Xander Harris. Always cracking jokes at inappropriate times and generally being a bit rubbish. He did however redeem himself somewhat by saving the world in the series six finale.
Nicholas Brendon is best known for, well Buffy to be honest. He has appeared in twenty episodes of Criminal Minds other than that his filmography is littered with movies that probably air only on Syfy. Demon Island, Fire Serpent and The Morningside Monster might have pretty awesome names but I suspect the title is the best thing about them…
Always humble though Nicholas is at ease with this “I want people to say, ‘Nicholas Brendon, he’s supposedly the nicest guy in the world.’ I want to do good work, but more than that, I want to stay a good human being. That’s more important than any character I play.”
Not a bad goal to have, Mr Brendon I salute you.
I sure I read somewhere that David Boreanaz is frighted of chickens. So wipe that smug look off your face David and man up!
Spotted by a talent scout while he was out walking his dog, David had a small part in Married with Children in 1993. A few years later and he was a household name.
Angel got a spin off imaginatively entitled Angel. Airing simultaneously with Buffy, lasting one year longer and ending in 2004.
Despite a clamouring from fans and a mooted return Boreanaz has no desire to return to the role that made him famous “As far as returning to the show for a reunion, I could probably put that to bed now: I have no interest in doing that. It would have to be a bigger challenge, rather than going back to something.” In 2005 he got his wish and the part of Seeley Booth in Bones. Recently renewed for its tenth season, the crime comedy-drama shows no signs of stopping.
Who watches the Watchers? A council in Britain apparently. Rupert Giles aka that bloke from the Nescafe adverts.
Anthony Head is doing exactly what he was doing before Joss came a calling, a lot of TV work.
The only difference is he now gets recurring characters. Since his stint as Giles came to an end he has appeared in Little Britain, Merlin, Free Agents(never heard of it, ed) and You Me and Them.
Head is keen to keep pushing himself in both his career and private life, always looking for excitement “Don’t fall back on the parachute” he is quoted as saying, “go outside the zone of confidence and find out what’s on the other side.”
A prime example of this is his work with George Sarah, the 2002 album Music for Elevators
Was Cordelia a cheerleader? I totally forgot about that! Hey Charisma how you doin?
Named after an Avon perfume, Charisma Carpenter auditioned for the role of Buffy but was instead cast as Cordelia Chase.
She followed David Boreanaz to Angel but since then the work has dried up, a few TV movies, (Voodoo Moon anyone?) and the TVs show Veronica Mars and The Lying Game have kept her busy. A few scenes in The Expendables and its sequel have failed to reignite her profile.
However the actress from Las Vegas might just be waiting for the right project because when quizzed about her lack of roles she replied “Lots of doors have opened for me because of Buffy and Angel but, although I’m ambitious, I’m not going to just do anything simply because the money is good. If I can’t love a project, then I’m not interested.
If your going to have a show about vampires, werewolves, demons and demigods, you might as well chuck in a witch. Step forward Willow Rosenberg.
Arguably better known for How I Met Your Mother, Alyson Hannigan has also stared in the American pie films as Michelle (one time at band camp).
She is married to Alexis Denisof , who acted beside her in Buffy and H.I.M.Y.M. Indeed due to their heavy schedules Alyson was delighted to be working with her partner “It was great for a change to share a week’s work, rather than being on different projects. With the hours Alexis and I spend on set, you can tend to pass like ships in the night.
Hannigan is somewhat responsible for Buffy’s theme tune as she introduced Joss Whedon to the Band Nerf Herder.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon anyone?
